Outdoor boot camps in Wellington recorded higher attendance figures at the start of July compared with the same period last year, according to records kept by local operators.
The increase coincides with longer daylight hours and a city-wide push from the Wellington City Council to promote active recreation in public spaces. Residents cite the appeal of training near the harbour rather than inside gyms during winter months.
Classes now operate most weekdays at Frank Kitts Park on the waterfront and on the lower slopes of Mount Victoria. Both locations offer flat ground for circuits and nearby shelter when southerly winds pick up.
A session at Frank Kitts Park begins at 6:30 am with a five-minute walk or jog along the promenade. Participants then move through body-weight stations that include step-ups on park benches, resistance-band rows and short sprints marked along the grass. The hour finishes with a static stretch sequence facing the harbour.
Mount Victoria groups follow a similar pattern but add hill repeats on the paths leading toward the lookout. Trainers adjust intensity for different fitness levels while keeping the group together.
Interested residents can register through the Wellington City Council active communities listings or directly with the trainers who post weekly schedules on local noticeboards at the central library. Sessions run regardless of light rain, so participants bring a light shell and a change of layers.
Anyone new to the format is advised to arrive ten minutes early for a quick chat about injuries or limitations. The council also lists free taster sessions on its website for the remainder of July.
