Wellington parkrun events drew 1,240 registered finishers across three local courses on 4 July 2026.
The weekly 5-kilometre timed runs fit into an established local pattern of outdoor activity that has expanded since the first Wellington event began in 2012. Residents cite reliable access to flat or gently sloped routes near public transport stops and changing facilities as the main reasons they keep returning. Morning temperatures in the low single digits have not reduced turnout at the main sites, according to volunteer records kept by parkrun New Zealand.
The Oriental Bay course starts at the northern end of Oriental Parade near the Freyberg Beach changing rooms and follows the waterfront path past the Waitangi Park playground before turning at the cable car terminus. Runners finish on the grass beside the lagoon. The Hataitai Park event begins at the corner of Moxham Avenue and Waitoa Road and loops twice around the sports fields and adjacent walking tracks. Both locations provide free on-street parking and nearby bus stops on routes 2 and 14.
Volunteer coordinators at each site record split times at the 2-kilometre and 4-kilometre marks using the standard parkrun barcode system. Finish tokens are handed out beside a single folding table that also displays the weekly results sheet. No entry fee applies, though participants must register once online before their first run.
The Oriental Bay event averaged 312 finishers each Saturday through June 2026, while the Hataitai course recorded 178. Both figures come from the public results archive on the parkrun New Zealand website. The next events at both locations are scheduled for 11 July at 8:00 a.m., with volunteer briefings held five minutes before the start.
Anyone planning to attend can download the free parkrun app for barcode scanning and check the course page for any last-minute path closures caused by weather. First-time runners are advised to arrive fifteen minutes early to collect a barcode and hear the safety briefing delivered at the start line.
